Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the gallbladder to treat gallstones or other gallbladder conditions. The gallbladder collects and stores bile, which is a digestive fluid generated by the liver. The gallbladder is placed on the right side of the belly, below the liver.
A cholecystectomy would be conducted to treat gallstones and the complications they can bring. As a result, a cholecystectomy can be used to treat the following problems:
• Gallstones in the gallbladder or bile duct
• Cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)
• Pancreatitis caused by gallstones
• Gallbladder polyps
• A cholecystectomy has a low risk of complications, which include:
• Bile leaking
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Nearby structures, such as the bile duct, liver, and small intestine, are injured.
• General anaesthesia risks include blood clots and pneumonia.
• The risk of problems is determined by your overall health and the cause of your cholecystectomy.
Food and medications: To prepare for a cholecystectomy, your surgeon may ask you to:
Eat nothing the night before your surgery. You can have a sip of water with your meds, but you should avoid eating and drinking for at least four hours before your procedure.
Stop taking certain medications and supplements. Inform your doctor about all drugs and supplements you are taking. Continue to take most medicines as prescribed. Your doctor may advise you to stop using medicines and supplements if they raise your risk of bleeding.
Most people go home the same day as their cholecystectomy, but problems might arise that necessitate one or more overnight stays in the hospital. Bring personal goods such as your toothbrush, comfortable clothing, and books or periodicals to pass the time if you need to stay in the hospital.
Find someone to drive and accompany you home. Request that a friend or family member drive you home and remain with you the first night after surgery.
